NYC's abstract AIDS Memorial nears completion in the West Village
It's located in the center St. Vincent's Triangle Park across from the former hospital.
Close to four years after the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission signed off on the abstract NYC AIDS Memorial Park at St. Vincent's Triangle in the West Village, the structure is finally nearing completion.
Designed by the Downtown Brooklyn-based architecture firm studio ai architects, the structure features three metal triangles that essentially create an 18-foot-tall canopy. Plans had once called for the canopy to be covered by ivy and flowers, but the development team and architecture firm abandoned those plans, after the Landmarks Commission raised concerns about the upkeep of the greenery. Rudin Management, the developer that converted the former St. Vincent’s Hospital into a luxory condo complex known as Greenwich Lane, is also behind the development of the memorial, along with Global Holdings. The urban planners behind the memorial itself worked to raise $6.5 million to make the structure a possibility, and for the maintenance and programming thereafter.
The park around the memorial was completed last summer, and the AIDS memorial is expected to be complete by the end of this year. When work wraps up, there will be a water feature under the canopy as as well engraved text with poetry and quotes relating to the city’s response to the AIDS epidemic. The memorial will have a public dedication on World AIDS Day (December 1) this year, shortly after which the site will be handed over to the city's Parks Department.
