Stories of human rights violations in Zaporizhzhia made bus stops

Diagnosis is a stigma
The second point of the tour is near the memorial to people with HIV/AIDS. It was installed in Zaporizhzhia in 2017 at the initiative of the charitable foundation "100% Life Network. Zaporizhzhia", and it is representatives of this organization that helps people with HIV who meet the tour participants at the location. "We chose this particular location. Why? Because two years ago, in cooperation with the public and local government, this monument "HIV-AIDS affects everyone" was erected as a reminder to all residents of the city that there is an HIV-AIDS epidemic in Ukraine, and it really affects everyone, and through social action we can overcome this infection," explains Oleksiy Protsenko, senior specialist of the charity foundation.

A representative of the "100% Life Network. Zaporizhzhia" says that despite significant medical advances that have made AIDS no longer a fatal disease, attitudes toward those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS remain prejudiced. Protsenko cites the story of a young athlete who lives in one of the districts of the region. "She was training in a section and decided to tell her best friend about her HIV-positive status, which she had had since birth. And it so happened that the girl told everyone who was studying with her in the group that she was HIV-positive. She faced bullying, discrimination, and stigma. Children did not want to play sports with her. And our psychologist did a lot of work with them to change the stigma, to change the attitude of children towards HIV-positive people - and now the girl is already a candidate for master of sports, she continues to train. This is a small victory when we were able to change public attitudes towards HIV-positive people," says Oleksiy Protsenko.
