Spotted in the Financial District: People With A.I.D.S. Plaza
Right by City Hall, I came across a plaza called “People With A.I.D.S." The area is named after an organization and the sign itself was installed with the hopes that it would eventually raise awareness about the syndrome. However, its reception by the public hasn’t all been positive.
While some people find it to be funny or strange, others have argued that the label is offensive or insensitive – especially since there are more euphemistic alternatives. For example, "A.I.D.S Awareness Plaza" is one pausible choice.
Whether or not you agree with this opinion, one thing is for certain…the sign is truly a head turner.
