Plaque honors first EMT in city to contract HIV while on duty
NEW YORK - There is a new memorial dedicated to the first EMT in the city to contract HIV while on duty.
A plaque with Tracy Allen Lee's name is now up at an EMS station in East Harlem. Sunday marked 20 years since she died.
In 1989, just 17 months into her career, Lee was helping an AIDS patient who was bleeding to death. Her gloved hand got caught on a nail as she helped pull the man into a hallway. She didn't notice until she was done that her glove was torn and their blood had mixed.
Lee tested positive for the disease four years later and died at the age of 34.
The city refused her request to designate it as a line-of-duty injury that would have given her additional medical benefits. It wasn't until after her death that she got the line-of-duty designation.
