Saint Clare's Hospital is a former Catholic hospital, located in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It operated from 1934 to 2007. [Wikipedia]
When AIDS began to hit New York, Archbishop John J. O'Connor approved the opening of a specific AIDS facility at St. Clare’s in November 1985 called Spellman Services Center, later renamed to Spellman Center for HIV-related Diseases. It was the first hospital in New York to care for HIV/AIDS patients.
A Book of Remembrance is mentioned by AIDS doctor Daniel Baxtor in his book The Least of These My Brethren on page 2.
In 2003, St. Clare’s Hospital came under the auspices of Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center, and was renamed St. Vincent's Midtown Hospital. In the process of streamlining medical care, St. Vincent’s Midtown Hospital was closed on 31 August 2007.
The Book of Remembrance at the Spellman Center should be at the Archives of the Archdiocese New York.
